Highlighting SBC's participation in the new arena are a number of key elements that borrow from the company's advancements in communications technology. One of those is an advanced data-routing system providing what arena officials refer to as an expanded network interconductivity. Sparks adds, "It will allow us to provide video-coaching services to multiple editing suites. We can take live video from a game and send it to the coaching room at SBC Center and edit it for the coaches and players to review at half-time.
We can also send it to the video-editing suite at the practice facility so the players can watch it there. Sparks points to a new interactive computer system as another feature that will separate SBC Center from the pack. Sparks says the wireless computer systems will connect with the inch plasma screen televisions installed in each of the suites. With the computers, fans will be able to access real-time video replays and select from a number of different camera angles.
They will also have online access. He describes the Alamodome as an arena inside a stadium. There are a lot more events that are appropriate for an arena than a stadium. Asked if the success of the Alamodome's arena configuration puts it in the position of even more directly competing against the new SBC Center, Abington says, "Absolutely.
That's exactly what it means. But it's taken a long time and we still haven't convinced all of the entertainment industry that we are an arena inside a stadium. Whereas the Alamodome is located near downtown hotels and attractions, SBC Center is, at least for now, somewhat lost among industrial buildings and warehouses. But there is something to be said about downtown San Antonio," says Abington.
The heart of San Antonio beats downtown. Zito, who went from being facilities manager of the Alamodome to now serving as vice president and general manager of SBC Center, says the two facilities can mutually prosper.
I think we will each have our respective place. There were some conversations at one point that centered on the possibility of the SBC Center and the Alamodome signing some type of joint-marketing or non-compete agreement. Asked if dome officials ever agreed to such an arrangement, Abington says, "No.
I can see no positive benefits to the citizens of San Antonio, who own the Alamodome. If we thought it benefited us, we would have brought it up. In addition to the 18,seat SBC Center offering some of the latest bells and whistles in arena design, Abington says one of it's strongest assets will be its newness.
That is especially true in the lucrative concert business, says Abington, explaining that Verizon has already cut into dome business. That typically lasts two to three years. The Alamodome may have seen that trend hit them already as the Rolling Stones have bypassed the larger Alamodome for a Nov.
They will play the new Reliant Stadium in Houston Jan. Without the Spurs and with competition for events heating up, Abington says dome officials are working to put a plan together that protects the facility's bottom line and the city's best interests. But that work, according to Abington, is made more difficult at a time when so much is so fluid. Much of what we have to do now is instinctive and based on judgment. Posted: Mar 01, Facebook Twitter.
