Because the water was so low for so long, willows first sprouted, then established dense thickets along the eastern shore, he said. Lake Perris will have additional, high-quality habitat for a couple decades thanks to Mother Nature. In any event, the habitat is much better than it was a few years ago — and superior to what was there before the draw-down. Still, it will take a couple years for the fishery to fully recover and reach its potential, he said. Lake Perris was originally stocked with Alabama Spotted Bass and during the lake's early years record fish were caught. The introduction of largemouth bass has diminished the spotted bass fishing. Nevertheless, Lake Perris is considered a top fishing lake for bass, trout, and other species. Large portions of the lake are kept to a 5 MPH speed limit. Lake Perris has one large family campground with sites for tents and for RVs. The sites are close together with sparse vegetation.
Water and electricity hook-ups are provided at the RV sites. There is a nearby horse camp with corrals. Campgrounds have hot showers. A number of good RV Resorts are located in the area. There is no lodging at Lake Perris. Plentiful lodging can be found in nearby Moreno Valley and other cities in the area.
While the railroad had played an important part in establishing the new town, the people now turned to agriculture for their future development.
Because of limited groundwater, dry grain farming was the main crop before water was brought to the valley by the Eastern Municipal Water district in the early 's. Alfalfa, the King potato which would produce two crops a year , and still later, sugar beets became the mainstay of farming the Perris Valley. The annual Rods, Rails and Potato festival in June celebrates the regions agricultural past.
